A "bye" week in football is when you don't have a game a certain week. It's not a "week off" cause normally you still have practices, just no game. In the playoffs, a "bye" is when you don't have a game usually beacuse you are the top ranking seed and you automatically advance.Bye weeks are necessary for football, because the players are very, very fatigued during the season (hey you'd be too if you were hitting into against 220 lb guys who run a 4-something 40) which is why you never see bye weeks during weeks 1-3. it is also as someone above me said to make the season longer and more revenue for the NFL. It may derive from the fact that the word "bye" means a leaving or a salutation and on a bye week you are saying "bye" to the feild, at least temporarily.

To have a bye week in football is considered having preferential treatment for the week. Meaning, because of the rigors of football and the amount of stress that players are under physically, they give them a bye week to give them a break.

I would think a "bye" week would be the week your team screws up and is out. A "bi" week is when the team plays on a bi-weekly basis rather than every Sunday or Monday. They take off a week sometimes during beginning season.
