I thought it could be accidently but he did it a couple of times today ! I have 5 other kids but none talked at 5 months. Isnt this young ?

How cool, pity you didn't catch it on tape!

My girls were all babbling "dadadadad" at five months, so no it's not too early for him to be saying his first word. My latest is four months old, and she clearly says "you" when I talk to her (I often say "Hey there you" and she's obviously mimicking the last sound I make).

Congratulations!! I remember how exciting it was for my kids--my daughter said DADA, as usual, but my son said CHOCOLATE (lol). My mom tells me that my first word was HI. I guess I was outgoing even back then.

I don't remember when the kids started talking, I just remember wishing they hadn't!!!
One got the phrase "NEE-MAMA" in his mouth and must have said it for the next hour and half, over and over and over. ARG!!

Yes I believe you. Although my own children didn't speak till a bit later Imyself started speaking at 5 months.
My mum used to bath me then as i sat clean on her lap she would say 'Oh My!'. I repeated it at 5 months - then went on to say other things like 'Hello' and never looked back.
it is exciting and you are lucky to have a baby bright enough to respond back to you like this.

Although he may have said a word, he doesn't mean it. He probably doesn't know what it means. He probably just finds it fun to repeat things.

But in the very slim chance he does know what he's talking about, congrats, you've got a prodegy on your hands.

It depends if he continues to say the word in the correct context or not.

In my opinion, my daughter, who is 6 months, is now saying her first word. She has been babbling alot lately, and often the babble included mama. But this week she says mama clear as day AND puts her hands up to me while she says it. If she puts her hands up to her dad, she doesn't say it. I will walk in the room and she will see me and say MAMA!! So it counts only NOW that she actually means MAMA when she says it.... does that make sense?

So if he says WHAT and means WHAT, then it is technically his first word, other wise he is just using it for fun, and it doesn't count.
