This is a brain twister, to be sure. Let me pretend I am Marilyn Vos Savant, and try to figure it out for you.

Your first series of letters is wxy preceded by the letter k. Your second letter series is vut, which is tuv backwards, preceded by the letter J. And finally the last series is qrs, preceded by the letter I. What this actually is, is a scrambled series of a portion of the alphabet, so let's take it in the proper order to see how the pattern is set:

First of all, the letters K, J, and I, are out of sequence and reversed. It should be I, J, K. And your other letters are also out of sequence, but they follow the alphabet near the end. Let's start with QRS (forget the I for a second). The next series is TUV, rather than VUT, (forget the J for a second), and the last series is WXY(forget the K for a second) Now you have the alphabet in its proper sequence: QRSTUVWXY. Now putting in the other three letters, I, J, K, instead of the reversed J K I, should complete that part of the series, so the letters that precede K would be P O N in that order, followed by the letter L, if using that pattern. Here's what it would look like: lponkwxyjvutiqrs

Jeez, what a headache!!!

Your question is very interesting. The pattern proceeds as such: the alphabet written backward starting from k. So its K***J***I***H***. The three stars in between represent other letters of the alphabet: groups like WXY (which is spelled in the correct order) and VUT (which is spelled in reverse order. So it alternates.

So, the answer is H, P, O, N, G.

Great question.
