If liberals and conservatives sat down together, and instead of first articulating their differences and everything they disagree about,

sat down and first articulated their common goals, what values and ideas they hold in common, and then, and only then, discussed their differences in opinions on how to reach those common goals staying clearly within the context of the idea that we share more common goals than we may originally think?

This is the way our government used to work. It sure would be nice to see it go that way again.

Sam Rayburn and Everett Dirksun were buddies.

Lyndon Johnson used to have drinks with the republicans (and most everyone else).

Today it is just ugly. Your idea is a great one, tho.

Nowadays, those are few and far between. Each party has a different idea about America, whether good or bad. If the political climate today is any indication, then that won't ever happen.

It's as possible as any other liberal fantasy. Now that liberals have been at war against conservatives so fiercely for 6 years, they want to sit down and negotiate? Isn't that backward from the dogma?

The liberals would argue semantics and turn the whole thing into a pseudo-intellectual debate where they insisted theories are facts and that they know what is "good" for everyone while calling the conservatives a bunch of rich bigoted republicans.

It is always easier to notice differences than acknowledge similarities. That is the reason bigotry and prejudice exist.

with politicians, politics is a game. they don't care about getting along, they just want the power and the money. they would need to be starting from a certain place to achieve what you want to see, but they're not starting from that place.
