That's my question and I'm stickin' to it. The package says it is good for "all evergreens."

If Holly Tone is not a good choice, what do you suggest?

Thanks.

Thanks. I fed 22 new Leyland Cypres today and had some Holly Tone left over. Of 6 Globe Arborvitae I planted in the spring, one of them is looking a little punk, so I'd like to try to perk it up. I'm in southern New Jersey.

I disagree with Fluffernut... a fertilizer is not a fertilizer by any other name...

Hollytone is a great fertilizer from ESPOMA. It is however a little low in nitrogen (first number). Hollytone is higher in phosphorus (the middle number) and is generally better for flowering shrubs. Nitrogen is for green growth. The reason they say on the label "Great for Evergreens" (or whatever the verbage is) is because of the soil acidifiers.

ESPOMA makes an equally good product, called Treetone. It would probably be better for your evergreens, in regard to improving the growth of the shrubs. If your soil is alkaline or neutral, you can add a soil acidifier separately from your fertilizer. Both products are recommended for spring and fall applications. Now would be a safe time for the fall application, as the plant won't take up the nutrients until spring (Spring application is absorbed in the summer...).

My last point. Certainly any fertilizer (applied according to the directions) is better than no fertilizer. So if your goal is to simply use the product you have, you won't be doing any harm. You just might not be doing as much good as you could, with the 'right' product.

I hope that this helps
Good luck-

No offense fluffernut, I generally like your answers... ;)

Sure. Fertilizers really aren't that different but the labels are. I guess I'd ask are you nothern or southern hemisphere because northerners should be fertilizing now. Dormancy period is upon us........shortly.

Yes, you can use Hollytone on Arborvitae. But they don't normally need any encouragement to grow... they get out of hand quick enough.... but yes.. it is fine.
