I had an experience with that. I was landscaping my yard and it was getting very expensive. I had to take a break from it and I went to visit a friend of mine who lives in Calgary. When I got there, they showed me these whiskey barrels that they were using for planters in their yard. I thought to myself, those would look so nice in my yard. They asked me to help them cut them in half and inside the color was so rich and beautiful. I thought, 'Wow a good hi-pressure blasting on the outside and these would REALLY look spectacular in my yard.' I had seen the price of these wooden half barrels that were really shoddily built and I thought these would be too rich for my blood, they are the real article. When it came time to go home, they asked me how much space I had in my car because they wanted to send something home to a friend of theirs. I said 'a fair bit, why?' They put two of the half barrels in my car, one in the back seat and one in the trunk. When i put my petunias in them I could not believe what a beautiful addition they were to my yard. The price? Time spent helping and friendship. Yeah, some of the best things in life are free.

Rich people who have the best of everything and take nice things for granted say that to make the rest of us feel good.

Yes. But before you can enjoy the best things you need the basic things. The difference between no money and enough money is infinite. If you have enough money, more money does not increase happiness, except temporarily.

I would say that it depends on what a person would call "best things". Some may cost and some may not.
