The main reason to use substances like that is not because of their effect on the ball - it's primarily to reduce friction between the pitcher's fingers and the surface of the ball, thus allowing them to put more spin on it. Most of a ball's movement is a result of the amount of spin a pitcher is able to put on it and the rotation of the stitches: added a bit of spit doesn't significantly change either of those things. Thus, the change in a ball's movement as a direct result of the foreign substance is very minor compared to the change due to the difference in the pitcher's release.

Everything has a different effect on the ball...When pitching , if you are going for more movement then yes it helps...The rotation on the ball is what creates the movement...By wetting your fingers with anything you mentioned you are going to increase the speed of the rotation creating more of a darting or breaking effect...Vaseline is oil so you get the most out the break there, but the whole thing is about the spin of the ball, more spin = more movement = more foolish looking hitters...

Bernoulli's concept, similar element that makes an airplane fly. The ball spins, air is shifting swifter for the era of one aspect of the ball than the different. swifter air stream lowers the pressure on the ball and the ball strikes in that route. The the axis of spin is perpendicular to the floor because it strikes, the ball will curve to the right or left, searching on which way that is spinning. even if that is spinning end over end, it is going to both dive down or upward push up depending of is spinning ahead or upward. attempt throwing a sea coast ball with spin on it and also you'll see what occurs in an exaggerated way.

Yes, that is why in the majors, pitchers can get in trouble for putting water on their shirts and then touching it and then throwing the ball......or if they use their hands to wipe their mouths........it adds moisture to the all and can also make it slippery, making it harder to hit........
good question
