cramps are caused by a substance that is released naturally during your period or just prior called prostaglandin. Birth control pills help camps a lot because they keep the body from manufacturing very much prostaglandin. Drugs like ibuprofen and alieve inhibit the release of prostaglandins and so if you take them early enough they work well also. Most women respond well to comfort measures like hot water bottles and resting too. I have heard that taking extra magnesium and calcium also prevent cramps. Of course taking a birth control pill like Lybrel (where you don't have a scheduled period but once a year) or using Depoprovera (the shot) will just do away with periods...and then cramps usually resolve indefinitely.
Just one word of caution: there is a condition called endometriosis that can cause terrible cramps during your period...if your cramps don't resolve with one of the above mentioned treatments I would see a health care provider to make sure you don't have this.

Try chamomile tea or raspberry leaf tea, if you have either of these to hand. A hot water bottle often does help ease the discomfort but won't be of much help if you are in hot weather rather than cool weather as it would just add to your discomfort under such weather conditions. If the pain is really bad then please take painkillers...whatever type you tolerate well or don't have an allergy to. Drinking either chamomile tea or raspberry leaf tea regularly can insha'Allah help reduce pain of a period each month. Also: a calcium/magnesium combination tablet (e.g. dolomite) can often help as both minerals can help with muscle spams/cramping.
Hope this helps and I hope you find relief soon.
Best wishes.

Drink some water, take some ibuprofen when you have the pain, and run at least a few times a week (both when you're on your period and when you're not). when you're having the pain, slow stretching and gentle heating can help.

Okay this will sound really weird but it usually works.
Lay on your back on the floor.
Hug your knees as close to your chest as you can.
Rock back and forth for a few minutes.
Then lay somewhere comfy and place a hot water bottle on your abdomen until most of the pain is gone.
