Knowing the cause won't give an easy solution. This society would have to be completely restructured, and people would lose a lot of 'rights' that they currently take for granted.
But you wanted causes. The deliberate destruction of family values by the government and experts, the need for both parents in the household to work, empowering women by and while emasculating men, previous victims predisposed to becoming offenders, the normalization of homosexuality, legal abortion, easily accessible pornography, lack of prosecution and conviction for most offenders, victims fear of reporting incidents, no one believing reported incidents or denying it because they don't want to believe it, using sex to advertise everything, rampant promiscuity, etc, etc,. One last cause that no one wants to hear: Illegal immigration. As if we didn't have enough pedophiles here we allow in millions of unscreened people with different values and morals so as not to be seen as racist or xenophobic. And encourage them to break laws and keep all aspects of their culture.
I'm sure I've offended many people with those examples. But in a society where anything goes and opportunity abounds, why not pedophilia? Practically nothing is wrong any more (or it's wrong for some and okay for others), everything is a choice, and yet no one is responsible for their own behavior.

Maher isn't a pacesetter, he's a paid entertainer. who's Dawkins? or /whois dawkins? i do no longer save up with Atheists, Lutherans, Baptists or Muslims. Even the deniers of a faith might want to be enthusiasts and that is the position it receives scary to the point of absurdity. Why is this question directed in route of Politics, if something that is a Social or a regulation or a non secular statement. That tale is weak, from mum or dad, very weak.

First thought.
Anybody have any statistics on how many pedophiles were sexually abused as children? I bet its a fairly high number.
People who have been hurt, hurt people. I am not saying that just because they were abused, it is not the pedophiles fault. They could have chosen to work through the abuse, and not pass it on to someone else.
However, I think that anything even remotely approaching redress for this problem must lie in stopping all forms of sexual abuse, whether familial, neighbor, uncle, babysitter, what not. And making sure that truly good counseling and help is available to every victim no matter what that victim's economic level is.
Furthermore, we need to realize that sexual abuse comes in many forms. Sexual abuse can even be innapropriately romanticized relationships fostered by parents with their children, whose needs are not being met for whatever reason by their spouses or significant others. And the damage that form does, though very different from the damage done from what we traditionally consider sexual abuse, is extreme. This type is highly prevalent in American families right now, and it must be addressed and brought out into the open as well.
Also, as a society, we need to find a way to openly deal with sex. Right now, based on the media discourse on the subject, people talk about who they sleep with, the physical mechanics, whether they are happy with the physical mechanics of their partner and whatnot.
What we don't talk about enough, is the lasting bond that should precede these sorts of relationships. We still as a culture tend to think of sex as dirty and bad. We also tend to think of it in terms of adulthood, however, instead of viewing sex as adult only in terms of the lasting relationship with which it should come, we only view the act that way, so that 14 and 15 year olds, anxious to prove how adult they are, set about experimenting.

Sadly, pedophilia has been around as long as humans have existed. The Catholic priest scandal dates back to the 1950s! There have been rapes of children in many parts of the world for many years. We just didn't hear about because children didn't say anything and the media didn't potray the stories as much as they do now. I've heard so many cases of girls being abused by their relatives and many of these women are now into their mid-forties. The cause is unknow, they are just sick and depraved men. It has been around for a long time and there is no way to effectively ending it. Parents should teach their children not to talk to strangers or chat with people they don't know and always keep on eye on them. Remember over 90% of all child molestation abuses are done by relatives so parents should be careful who they let near the child and unfortunately, not to trust anybody.

Outstanding, I couldn't agree with you more yet I don't have an answer. Prisons aren't the answer they are already over crowded, this doesn't fit the requirements for capitol punishment (unless is causes the death of a child), mental health doesn't seem to help with all the repeat offenders. Good question I have two beautiful daughters at home, I worry for them every time they are not here for any reason. I really wish I had the answer other than just teaching and protecting them now.

I think it has always existed but is now being heavily cracked down on and brought to the attention of the public since the new media/internet age. Bravo to special investigators who are catching pedophiles left and right via sting operations. It is our duty to protect kids. It is a horrible reality in other nations as well, where human trafficking exists.

The Democrats today try to make it OK for every thing from animals and children just like drugs and pro choice.
It boils down to no morals so there is no right and wrong.
The sad truth is this has gone on from the beginning of time. Muhammad took a child wife.
The Muslim Turks took Christan girls and yes boys and made sex slaves of them. And Bush wants to deny the Genocide and sad to say which Brock my heart Rush sided with him on this which is to have the blood of this evil on them as well.
Men in family's of of incomes have done this evil on their own children and others close to them.
Some sick evil women must not be left out as they have also.
Which we see today with teachers and women get a pass for beating men on all levels from TV and other media so this is a double standard to let women off the hook when they are good looking and not men.
What this is all says is that on both side of the Alis the evil is spreading and this will over take us unless we wake up and make it a death sentance when some one hurts a child.
OK libs where are you now with your no morals and always saying " it is for the children" I all is this what you really mean and Bush and Rush wake up.

Its a cultural dysfunction. And so far, frankly, hasn't been studied to the extent it should be. That's important--most of the efforts (legal sanctions etc) are well-intentioned, but are being formulated based on the understandable revulsion people feel--not on a solid understanding of what's going on.
That being siad, here's some ovservations--but let me emphasize, I don't know the causes--these are simply the kind of empirical observations that are the starting point for trying to develop explanations (BTW--I am a sociologist).
>There appear to be two distinct forms of pedophilia. One is the person who targets very young children (pre-puberty) and the other targets young adolescents. Both are 'pedophilia," but the psychological patterns seem to be different. To put it another way--if a predator targets young teenage girls, thats one form of psychological dysfunction--but different from the pedophile who targets 8-9 year-olds (or even younger). The reason why this is important is that strategies that will address one type may or may not be effective in combating the other--just like some medicines will cure one disease, but are ineffective against another.
>The majority of pedophiles are white, middle class-and mostly male. That--to me--is a strong indication that this is something "social" or "cultural" going on. If it wern't, we'd expect to see the rate of deviance to be comparable in other ethnic/income groups.
>We've seen in the news a (deplorable) number of stories about "cartaker" roles being implicated--ministers, priests, teachers, childcare workers of all kinds. I DO NOT think there is anything "wrong with those professions (other than the cases where higher-ups in organizations have engaged in cover-ups). It is far more likely that the pedophile seeks out such professions/roles because they provide opportunity. But that does menan that we need to think seriously about how to formulate policy to screen out such individuals--before they end up in a classroom or child care program.
>There is a distnct "power/authority component." Most of the cases (with one important exception--below) involve individuals holding some kind of authority relative to the children they victimize.
>The exception is the (relative new) pattern of pedophiles using the Internet to find victims. There are some interesting points to make, however. One is that, although the predominance of white, middle-class males holds, the occupational pattern does not--we see far less of the correlation to "caretaker professions). The other is that it is almost exclusively targeting adolescents, not prepubescent children.
Okay--I know there's no answers here. Just observations that can lead to questions. But if we are going to understand what the causes of pedophilia are--and we need to--this is where we have to start.
EDIT--I left this out on purpose because thhis sould be a politicized issue. But the "neo-conservatives" answering have chosen to make it one. So here's one more correlation--and it is a very strong one. Most of the pedophiles have conservative backgrounds. Not liberal. Like it or not--that's what the empirical observations show.

I don't know the cause other than people are just sick and twisted.. but here is my solution.. we all know that pedophiles are not rehabilitative... so I say we rebuild Alcatraz and make a prison/camp/home and send all the pedophiles there permanently

I believe that the problem has always been there. . .it's just that people never discussed it much before. It was something that was able to thrive in past generations because in part very few were comfortable in confronting it and taking action against it. Victims were silenced or not encouraged to come forward. Now, I believe with more discussion & focus on this issue, more action is being taken to deal with this problem.
