I have had a cold on and off for nearly a month. This morning I started coughing up green phlegm. I am asthmatic and have felt pretty bad for 3 weeks but my chest feels clear so I am doubtful I have a chest infection. I just need something to get the stuff out of my sinuses and nose and start to feel a bit more energetic.
Anyone recommend anything alternative that might work like magic - or better than being pumped full of antibiotics AGAIN!

Forget to say reason I dont want antibiotics again is that over last 3 years probably had near on 50 courses and hence developing immunity and an allergy to penicillin!

echinacea. buy it in a tincture, as it gets into the system quicker. Put 15-30 drops in a little water and drink .Do this 2-3 times a day.then have a break for a week. Repeat process.
You must take vitamins, it's important, and vitamin c.
Pour boiling water into a large basin, add two teaspoons of mustard powder. Put your face over the bowl and place a towel over your head and the basin. Breathe in .It's like giving your face a sauna. This will help to unblock your sinuses. Your face will be dripping with sweat but keep going, as it really works well.
make yourself a ham sandwich and smother it with mustard. You'll feel you can soon breathe easier.

You could have a chronic sinusitis. With it your nose is stuffed up and you have a cough due to the post nasal drip even though your chest is clear. It can also make the symptoms of asthma worse. Sinus irrigation might work - you sort of rinse the sinuses out. You can do that either with products readily available at the drug store or with a neti pot (looks like a tiny tea pot and can be bought at the drug store) and a homemade saline solution. Be sure to ask your doctor though before you do that because it can spread bacteria to other sinuses.

Sinus problem natural but good remedy is:
Buy some eucaliptas crystals from chemist or supermarket then boil a kettel, pour hot water in to bowl adding just a FEW crystals, get a towel and place it over your head and over bowl making sure no gaps for steam to come out close eyes and breath. Do not go to low to water or you may burn your face but tell you your sinuses will clear through really well.
Natural if not sure about the crytals due to your asthma just use the boiling water just as good

Hm! I am almost as worried about your doctor as I am about you! Asthmatics are no more prone to bacterial chest infections than anyone else and the average number of BACTERIAL chest infections that the average person gets in a year is approximately NONE.

One of the major and most obvious symptoms of patients with asthma is that viral infections trigger their asthma off, and this is what causes the chestiness, bacterial infection is seldom an asthma trigger ergo asthmatics who get chesty don't get benefit from antibiotics.

When they are triggered the lungs get irritable, producing cough, the airways go in to spasm, producing wheeze and mucus and eosinophils ( the white cells involved in allergy) pour into the lungs. This produces mucous which is often green coloured as the eosinophils release virido peroxidase ( virido meaning GREEN) this is nothing to do with the infection, but is part of the asthma. 70% of asthmatics have rhinitis as well, which might be described as ' asthma up your nose ' so they always produce green nasal mucous as well.

The average person, asthmatic or not, gets about 7 virus infections a year, that is one infection every 7 weeks. If each of these produces triggering for 3 weeks, it means the asthmatic is symptomatic for 50% of their life!

If this describes you, it means your asthma is either untreated or poorly treated. You gave no information as to your regular asthma therapy. If you want to reduce the frequency and duration of your episodes, this needs to be dramatically improved. 3 years of repeated courses of antibiotics suggests you are not going to get this from your GP surgery, so, despite the fact that a asthma should be a GP management issue, I suspect you should be looking for a referal to a respiratory/chest physician in secondary care/hospital out patients.
