Would not recommend attempting to share a dial-up connection.
Will make an already slow connection even slower. Usually share a DSL or cable modem through a router or hub. I recommend a router as it offers more security and connection options. Router usually has a built-in firewall and other security measures. Some routers offer you both wired and wireless connections. Hubs are just a means of connecting computers together. As for hotel use without wifi, your laptop needs a notebook T10/T100 ethernet card installed for a CAT 5 cable connection (high speed connection) or just a normal phone modem for dial-up conection. If the hotel offered WiFi, you would need a wifi card which is a T10/T100 card with a adjustable receiving antenna.

A hotel that has wired broadband internet connections in their rooms would have a white RJ 45 cable with a connecting head that looks like the one you plug in to your phone. The RJ 45 cable is also usually thicker than your phone line. The only difference is that it won't fit into the telephone port on your laptop, but will fit nicely on the LAN port usually right next to it. Most computers nowadays come with this port preinstalled.
Once it's connected, you will see that this port on your computer will be lighted up and blinking. (as long as your laptop has been turned on). On your computer screen look to the bottom right and you will see a small new icon that looks like two connected computers (blue in color if you are using Windows). This indicates that the line is active and you can start surfing the internet.
Launch internet explorer, or another browser you have on your computer. The hotel's landing page, or guest portal will probably be loaded. Depending on your hotel, you will probably have to select a price plan from this page. After this, you will be able to surf the internet like how you would from the office or home.

Go to your friendly Verizon wireless store (or some other brand you like), and they will sell you a gadget that provides the connection for about $100 and charge you about $60 a month to use it.
If you have a landline, just disconnect the wireless modem and use a regular plug between the phone jack and your laptop jack opening.

Hi. Dial up uses the phone jack on the laptop. High speed uses a larger (RJ45) Ethernet jack. Wireless is preferred in most cases because of its speed and simplicity (no wires).
