If it is an inch-long caterpillar with long brown hairs and red spots on its back probably that is a "Brown Tailed Caterpillar" which is poisonous.

Generally, the brightly colored caterpillars are poisonous.Other poisonous caterpillars include the Monarch (banded with white/cream, black, and yellow stripes), Saddleback Caterpillar (an inch long and has poisonous spines with oval purplish-brown spot in the middle of a green patch on the back) and the Pipevine Swallowtail.

Be careful as poisonous caterpillars can cause rashes, skin irritation, headaches, breathing difficulties and sickness.

Two things you need to remember: caterpillars with bright colors and with spines are usually poisonous so be careful.

Probably not, but that's not quite enough information to be able to identify the caterpillar.

If you had a picture or something, it might be possible to be more accurate in the assessment of the caterpillar.
