im not sure, i only know how to play rugby union, i havent a clue how to play rugby league

Ditto the one who mentioned the different scoring, though this is a recent development on the scale of things. I remember 4 for a try in both codes, and indeed 3 for a try in the distant past (originally a try was worth nothing more than a chance to "try" to get the conversion)
In addition to the unlimited possession of union, the ball is always "live" whereas in league, each tackle signals the end of a play and the start of another.
Dead ball situations are dealt with differently. Union has line-outs (a throw in) and league does not.
The scrum in union is a serious fight for the ball. The scrum is enforced. In union, scrums frequently are won against the feed. This is a rarity in scrums in league, which are a little farcical, the ball normally being placed in the second row with no intervention from the referee! Union refs would not tolerate this.
There are also some obvious tactical differences, owing mainly to the fact that in union the ball stays alive. In union teams often give possession away with a kick to gain territory. This would not be the case in league, where using up your limited possesion of 6 tackle (or 7 if you get a "zero" tackle) is imperative.

yes for a start rugby union has 15 players on each side and league has only 13. in union (u) when tackled your team must fight for the ball where as in L you when in possesion of the ball you have 5 tackles to try and score a try after the 5th tackle you must kick the ball or score. the points are score differently too. in U a try is 5 conversion 2 drop gol,penalty 3. in L try 4 conversion 2, drop goal 1, penalty 2.

Apart from the earlier answers regarding numbers in the team, points, etc., league is a much faster game and for anyone that watches both codes for the first time, league is much more exciting.
