Cilia have a couple of main jobs that help the cell itself. Cilia can wave to move the cell from place to place. Cilia also make a current that brings food particles to a protozoans mouth. Paramecium and Vorticella are examples of organisms that move with and feed with cilia.

The cilia are made of microtubules. They can wave around - usually working in rhythm with many other cilia. See a short video of cilia in action: http://www.altavista.com/video/results?itag=ody&q=paramecium+feeding&kgs=1&kls=0

It helps them move form one place to another. Cilia also propel foreign particles and bedris form the area (like the upper respiratory tract)
