Hi! Nice to see you...!
All I can tell you is why I do it...
1.) The question is a good one, but I have NO idea what the answer is.
2.) I "try" to star ALL my contacts' questions. Some I answer, some I don't... If you star a Q, it goes to ALL your contacts. They may or may not answer it, but at least MORE people see the Q. If THEY star it in turn, it goes to all their contacts; etc. etc. See? The more people who SEE a question, the better chance of good answers.
3.) It says, "I saw your question, It's a good question. I am not ignoring you."
4.) Sometimes I happen onto a question that is too good! I star it! The reason for the "stars" is "I think this Question is interesting." If I answer a Q, I obviously think it's interesting. If I don't answer it, it means the same thing! "I think this question is interesting." Not more, not less.
I have no wish to make ANYone paranoid. I certainly have no desire to hurt any of the people here. If you prefer that people who don't actually answer the Q not star, maybe you could say so, in the details of the question?
When I first started on Answers, this is the way the "stars" were explained to me. It makes sense. The stars are supposed to be a GOOD thing. FYI....
(Y!A actually awards points for each 'thumbs up' on a Best Answer, up to 50 per answer. 1 point per T/U.)
Does this help? I hope it does... Have a great day! }:>

I've starred rather than answering and repeating something that's already been said. It indicates "Good Question" as far as I'm concerned. I star sometimes because I want my contacts to see it and add their answers. Also to come back later and read the responses, makes it easier for me to find again. Don't be paranoid. It's like a bookmark.

If I find the question interesting but yet others answered the question like I would I'd rather star than be the 20th person with the same reply.

I star without answering because when you star it appears on all of your contacts lists. If it is a good question and I don't have the answer I want to let them know about it. That, incidental is how I found this question, one of my contacts starred it and I picked up on it.

And what is the reason for someone giving you the best answer and only giving you 2 or 3 stars? What's that all about? Are they doing me a favor? I feel like telling them to take their best answer choice and $@@%^.

I do it whenever I find a very good question, but someone else has already answered the question better than I could have, or else written what I would have said anyway. Then, I give them a thumbs up.

I'm only Level One Precious - so when I run out of answers I can go back to my stars and answer the next day. â¥
