I am dreaming to get into UChicago, Washington University in St. Louis, a good private school, or a lower-level Ivy League like Duke or a ivy-league equivalent. I currently have a GPA of around 3.75, play baseball, but I know that I need to get involved in more clubs, volunteer programs, etc. I'm planning on taking the PSAT next Wednesday and the ACT in December. I have taken a practice test already for the PSAT.

I go to a smaller high school that isn't likely to be considered a upper-tier secondary school, so I'm probably going to have to be in the top 2 or 3 in my class along with an ACT score of at least 29, right? Any help would greatly be appreciated. I plan on majoring in either business administration or economics and management.

You are on the right track. If your HS offers honors or AP classes, make sure you take them. The typical student admitted to thse schools has a 3.8 unweighted GPA with a weighted GPA over 4.0, SAT scores in the 2150+ range and lots of extracurriculars. Even then, the majority of qualified applicants to any one of these schools gets turned down.

I suspect that extracurriculars do not count as much as some people think -- since they are easily faked and hard to verify. To set yourself apart, you need a killer admissions essay.

One other point -- Duke University is not in the Ivy League. And if it were -- it would not be considered a "Lesser" Ivy school. It is often ranked higher than the majority of Ivy League schools.

Another point -- Cornell and Penn are the only Ivy League schools that have an undergraduate business program. Penn's Wharton school is much harder to get into than its Economics program.
