Yes, it did exist then and it exists now. But things are diffrent from back then and now. Back then, witchcraft was used for healing people and animals, or other things. Now people have figured out how to use it and conjure things or use spells are arn't healing. It is hard to do properly but if you get the hang of it it's pretty easy. Magic and witchcraft are basically the same thing, though people sometimes exaggerate magic. Some people(this is rare though) can transform into mythological creatures. But not as they please, it comes when it wants. For example, for mermaids it comes when they're in the water. Werewolves, full moon. Elves, when there is other magical being around. Please mail me if you have any further questions or would like to talk about this with me.

Witchcraft (the practice of magic by witches) or truly magic was practiced in all societies of the world. After the magical persecution it's practice merely went underground as it is today. People are born magical and they can be born into any religion. There is no set religion of witches and wizards, they are individuals, religion is a choice. Although magical practices change over time, religion has no bearing on it. Magic is not dictated by religion. Today a lot of wizards are not religious as generally people are not as religious nowadays. However in medieval times, during the rise of the Puritans, magic was practiced but most of the people would have been Christian. The use of herbs in magic dates back very far and is integral in the study of herbs for their magical property. Magic is not all about spells there are magical arts; or aspects of magic. Wicca is not the religion that has all the magical people, there are many more. Magic and religion are NOT the same. A witch or wizard are not religious titles. There is no basis for thinking so. Being magical does not denote religious belief.

During the magical persecution most people burnt for being witches or wizards were actually not magical at all. There were a lot of non magical people that were convicted and burnt. The great fear of magic led to people turning against their fellow men and women. Although more women were burnt than men. The Church wanted to have more control over their people so wanted to stop people visting the wise men and women (witches & wizards) and so outlawed magical practice.

Witchcraft is real - but the Puritans and others religious zealots didn't understand it. So they feared it, called it evil, and went on a killing rampage. They basically took out the healers, the wise women, the herbalists, the mid-wives, the women with old injuries whose joints "predicted" the weather, the infirm, the mentally challenged, those of different religions, and those whose land was wanted by someone of a higher social class.

There is no evidence that any of these people actually did what the zealots feared - worshipping the Devil. Very few probably even practiced witchcraft/magick, which is a peaceful and helping nature-based way.

In essence, the Church licensed a killing spree of innocents in order to gain control, money, and property. Those who didn't join them became their victim. I still shudder to think about it. Thank goodness religious freedom is now guaranteed by our Constitution.

Witchcraft, alchemy, astrology etc. are ancient people's sciences.
Every ancient science is a pseudoscience which means they are not based on science but they are regarded scientific at ancient times.

Witchcraft is the starting point of the sciences we today call medicine and astronomy.

The potions, herbs and magical tools of witches became the treatments, pills and medical tools of doctors.
Witches's interest in correspondences became astronomers's interest in outer space.

But in its original form, today witchcraft is only a belief.
A belief is a hypothesis / supposition hold to be true which means there is no scientific proof showing witchcraft works.

But it creates a placebo effect:
If you cast a spell that you believe in it, you fool your brain.
Your brain starts to work according to your wish if your wish is not impossible.

So, in its original form, it only helps to motivate yourself.

P.S.: Placebo effect is not a proof for witchcraft. Remember that without casting a spell, with taking a useless pill and believing it is beneficial, you can create the effect.

I'm pretty sure they refered to medicicines as "magic" or "witchcraft." They probably believed in witches, you see, so they probably refered to any miracle as "witchfraft." Witchcraft was actually healing with herbs and medicine, without anything to do with witchcraft or witches.

Witchcraft is real (and NOT evil). Back then the witchcraft they did was for healing purposes only. Now there are spells for protection, health, money and lots of other helpful things.

I definately believe in magick and witchcraft. Back then I wouldn't know what they defined "witchcraft" as so I don't think that it is the same as what modern witchcraft is like. Back then they had way different ideas then what we do now.

Most witches burned at the stake were Christians. It was called mass hysteria.
The few that MIGHT have been burned or stoned or pressed or whatever, were most likely kitchen witches. Healers of the old ways, nothing more.
Now there are witches today. It's a religious title generally. Many pagans consider themselves witches when working with magic and ritualized prayer.
