how long does it take for a lawyer to get divorce papers drawn up? and if the papers are promised and you go to sign them and they arnt ready, and your promised they will be ready in a few days and they arnt should you get another lawyer? Is 3 weeks a long wait just to see the simple no frills divorce paper work from my layer

he was paid 750 retainer and hasnt done anything that i can see yet

If I understand your statement it is now 3 weeks beyond the time you were told the papers would be ready.
If this is correct I would recommend that you file a complaint with your location's equivalent of the lawyers' disciplinary administrator's office. This kind of lag is a breach of several points in their code of conduct.

Absolutely get another lawyer if you're not happy with the one you've already got. Hopefully you haven't paid him/her in advance. I would call the lawyers office Monday, and say if the papers aren't ready to be filed and signed by close of business on Monday, Tuesday at the latest, you'll find another lawyer who will do it. Then, do just that.

A quick question. Are you up to date with the money you owe your lawyer. When they aren't getting paid, then they tend to stall you. If that isn't the case, I would fire him and possibly sue him for malpractice, if you can find another lawyer willing to sue "one of their own".
