What happens if I accidentally put 15w 50 instead of the recommended 10w 40 into my vauxhall corsa?

I was using 15w 40 (as this was all I could get and so I was already NOT using the recommended oil) for the past year but accidentally put in the wrong oil today.

What will happen to my car which had 15w 40 in but now has 15w 50?

I am in the UK, its nearly winter but its never that cold here. It was not an oil change just topped it up as it was almost empty. The car has 74k on it

Also should I now add some of the older oil 15w 40 to make it thinner?

Was this just a quart that you added (minimal effect) or a whole oil change? Your oil will be a little thicker. Might be just fine in summer, especially if your car has quite a few miles on it. Might not be the best for starting in a really cold winter.

not the best idea for the winter. you will stress out the oil pump, make extra wear in the egine due to dry starts and u will definetly lose gas mileage. i recomend that u change your oil with the right viscosity. im not saying that your car will blow up, but she wont be happy.

It will make absolutely no difference. Don't worry a bit. You won't see either extremes that the numbers represent.

as long as you didn't put diesel oil in a gas engine or gas oil in a diesel its fine.
