Baby walkers are BAD for them.
Baby walkers are dangerous: 20,000 children a year are injured.
Walkers are outlawed in Canada.
Doctors are trying to outlaw walkers in the U.S.
Baby walkers are NOT good for development, in fact babies that used walkers are slower to walk than babies who didn't.
So, let's see, they physically hurt babies, they're outlawed in some countries, and it stops them from walking.
Baby walkers are bad for babies.

Baby walkers are not good for babies and some designs are actually dangerous. If you use them for very short periods of time (such as while getting a meal ready) and they don't move (like an exersaucer) they are fine. You need to be there to supervise as some children have been injured even in exersaucers!
The advantage of baby pulling around on the floor and crawling is that it develops the chest muscles. These are MUCH more important to develop at this time than leg muscles. I have been to too many homes where the baby is in the walker all the time (well, he's having so much fun!).

Both of my children have used walkers and haven't had any issues or injuries related to the use of a walker. I do know that with a walker there is a need for constant supervision so that is what we do. We watch my son closely when he is in his walker. My daughter was walking at 10 months and my son took his 1st unassisted steps yesterday at 9 1/2 months.

Walkers with wheels are very dangerous and should not be used. I know in Canada, it's against the law to use or sell a walker with wheels.
If you're talking about the Exersaucers that have the curved bottom, they're great for babies development. They help baby learn how to straingten their legs out from the curved way they usually hold them, makes legs stronger and improve balance.

I've heard that walkers can promote bowleggedness, poor cooridination, and actually delay natural walking. I just don't see them as a necessity.
As for Exersaucers, I've also heard that they aren't safe, either. They can vibrate and move with Baby's vibrations causing falls down stairs, in to things, etc.
I found some interesting articles on the subject by searching "baby walker safety".

no they stunt muscle growth in the legs unless they can reach the floor and are acutally ready to walk, in which case hold them by the hands and walk them around the room...if you are looking for an entertainment type thing get an exersaucer or a johnny jump up. walkers are dangerous.
the exersaucers are not dangerous...they do not move they have a flat base( at least my sisters does) they bounce up and down and the seat spins

Years ago they were used all the time. Now a days it becomes and issue with the gov't's approval of them. They were a great leg strengthening device and were excellent for coordination. They kept the child amused and focused. They also enable the child to see from a different level...but having said all that, you had to watch them all the time or things may happen, e.g. pulling something off a table and hitting them somewhere, falling down the stairs if there were any, hurting their feet if there was anything on the floor, pulling on electrical cords, banging into furniture, etc. So, yes, they are good for them physically if you are watching every second, and no, if there are inherant dangers....30 years ago or so, we did not forsee all the problems, but were gifted enough to watch and learn and use them with discretion.

I'm not comfortable with a toy that my baby can wheel all over the house. She may wheel into the table and knock my coffee cup over onto ther head. I don't have stairs, but you can see that's an obvious hazard.
Exersaucers are lots of fun for babies. They can jump, spin, play and have a snack in the saucers. My sister also loved her doorway jumper, but I've never used one.
