A common ailment with kids in jr high/middle school is called Osgood-Schlatter's Syndome. Basically, when the kids hit their growth spurt, bones, muslces, tendons, and ligaments aren't growing at the same rate. This commonly manifests as pain in the knees, right around the tibial tuberosity (the bump immediately down the leg from the kneecap). Most docs simply write a pass for them to skip PE until it clears up.

Of course, if she's not in that age group, it could be many things: caused by trauma (something hit it), a sprain (ligaments stretched), incorrect tracking of the knee cap.. it could be anything.. either give us more info, or have a doctor try to diagnose it.

Good luck!
