Depends on the type of crossword.

I go for clues that are not as straightforward. For example..reading room..I might use a clue like "Place where your future may be told" instead of something like "a place for study." I would be referencing of course the idea of having your palm read to tell your future. Where that is done could be called a "reading room." I tend to enjoy puzzles that make me figure out the clue as well as the correct answer. It's hard to do with every clue for every answer, but it is fun to try and come up with those types of clues.
