'Brubaker' starring Robert Redford back in 1980. I'll never forget that night because when I got home we got the news that my grandfather had died.

It might have been around 1983. It was "Dragonslayer", which I'd seen a couple of years before in the theater at the mall. I think I had to leave before the second film because I worked a third-shift job; I don't have a clear memory of it. Or, perhaps it started to rain.

Not long after I went, they closed the drive-in though the screen, speaker stands and other structures remained for quite a while. By then, I'd been going to movies there on a regular basis for three decades! I still remember going to the movies with my parents; Dad always traded for a station wagon, which was the minivan of "yesteryear" I suppose. It was always a momentous event, going to the movies, especially the drive-in. Now, most people are spoiled by those muti-movie theaters, so it's not an extra-special treat anymore as it was for us. Drive-ins were special fun because we could pop a bagful of popcorn and fill a cooler with "pop" (soda pop, soda or whatever it's called in your region~in glass bottles, of course). Best of all, my sister and I could wear our pajamas; then, when we got sleepy, we would bed down in back, which was fixed up with blankets and pillows. It was an inexpensive family adventure.

By the way: There are a lot more drive-ins left than they give credit for. Illinois has a number of them; one town has a double drive-in! They're all open and active. I wonder why they don't list these; after all, the towns and cities are on the map.

Yea! I hopped on the Net and did a search for Illinois drive-ins, some newer and some ancient by most people's standards, including Newton, which is practically next door:

Fortunately we live in a town that still has one of the last remaining drive in theatres(Newberg Oregon). Even though we should take advantage of the fact that we have a drive in theatre we don't due to sports and boating during the summer. The last movie we seen was Pirates of the Caribbean 2 with Surfs Up. Both of them unfortunately but my family to sleep(Boring). There we were in our suburban with the back doors open sleeping, only to be awaken as the movie had ended and cars were pulling out. We laugh about it thinking how many people walked by our truck on their way to the snack bar and discovered us sleeping by my loud snoring... :)

...that would be 1983; I was going to Naval Mechanic's School, up around Great Lakes, Michigan. A couple of buddies and me went to a drive-in theater, several miles down a dirt road, off the main highway, and in the middle of the woods; the double feature was "Poltergeist" and "Clash of the Titans". During the presentation, I got somewhat toasted (...thanks to several well-place beers), but my buddies got extremely wasted (...thanks to chasing down their beers with raspberry brandy). After sitting through both films, and then "Poltergeist" again, my buddies were passed out and comatose; knowing that we had to get back to base, I huffed them into the back seat, and commandeered the car, which was,,,EGAD...a stick shift, which I'd never driven...

...least to say, after a rough and rugged tumble back down the dirt road, as well as a trip or two into a couple of small ditches, I got a real good handle on driving a stick shift, by the time I got to the main road, and past the main gate of the Navel Base...

...the Navy: It's not a job...It's an adventure!!!

1980. We saw "Airplane". We got a little stoned which made the movie even funnier.
