What do you feel is the cause of the decline gentlemen?

Gentlemen DO still exist, just in very small numbers! My husband is the true definition of a gentlemen...he not only opens doors for ladies, but men as well. He lights cigarettes, pulls out chairs and treats everyone he encounters with the utmost respect. I very rarely exit our car by opening my door myself! (Oh and BTW, we are not ancient!) lol

Honestly, I feel the cause of the decline is due to the women's rights movement. We had this discussion with a younger friend of ours (she's 23)and she said she doesn't a man to open a door, etc...she can do it all on her own.

My Daddy was a true gentleman and showed me the respect that I hoped to have from a man when I married...this in turn has taught me to raise my 2 boys as gentlemen. When they were younger, I'd stand in front of the door until one of them opened it lol...it worked! At 15 and 19 now, they always open doors and treat ladies as ladies.

Very good question. I'm anxious to see others answers.

Of course men still treat ladies with respect and yes, gentlemen still exist. I see lots of men opening doors for women, pulling chairs out, buying dinners, etc. This is also true for women, I see women holding doors and grabbing the dinner checks nowadays. As to the "cause of the declining gentlemen," it could be looked at as more of an increase in the feministic society interferring with how a gentlemen treats a lady.

Men today if not taught when young to treat women with respect or they have not yet learned it on their own don't know what they are doing wrong.

Society's change is largely caused by cause and effect, many of our generations chose to bring our children up a different way then what we were raised with. Many of the sixties generation decided this. I'm not saying they were right or wrong, or that whatever way they chose to raise their children you will always have those in society who spoil their children, and let them tell them what to do. It doesn't matter what period of life you look at this has always been happening, habitual behavior in families has been documented, sure some break the cycle but that a cycle exists or existed is what we look at.

There are gentlemen out there but they are few and far between. I think women's liberation did away with the gentlemen thing. It scared men to death because these feminists would actually bite their heads off for even opening the door for them. I for one wished there were more gentlemen. I so appreciate a man opening a door for me, or any simple act of kindness like that.

Yes I do and I think that the feminism movement had a lot to do with this, which is quite sad really. As a female, woman and, I hope, a lady I like to be treated with respect and am quite happy to admit that there are some things men are considerably better at.

overall, i belive that their is a decline in men with manners hence causing a decline in gentlemen...
it is true that our customs and morals have changed slightly, but that shouldent be an excuse for the lack of respect men have towards women...
so i say this to all the guys out there....
If you want to find a women who you will be happy and satisfied with for the rest of your life, and if you realy want a women who will love and treasure you... YOU BETTER TREAT HER WITH THE RESPECT SHE DESERVES!!...
if a man doesn't respect a women he will never have an everlasting happy and stable relationship...

There has been a general debasement of the culture across the board.

In the specific case of male discourtesy to women the following might be considered-

1. Influence of feminism, and consequent male perceptions of women as less "ladylike", and less requiring of respect as a class.

2. Greater competitiveness in society for time and resources

3. Increased informality in society, with informal modes of address, faux-friendly language etc.

4. Increasing parity of income between men and women.

5. Decline of a class structure.

It depends on the individual. Yes, gentlemen still exists. The decline is due to parents not teaching their son's manners and respect. God bless****

Gentlemen practically don't exist anymore. It's sad.
I think the cause of the decline is that ladies aren't all the ladylike either...

Funny thing-I was eating in a fast food joint yesterday and one of the female workers was trying to get this one male customer to call this female. They apparently had known each other in the past. He finally called and started laughing. He said I guess if I want to talk to her, I will have to pay her phone bill. I thought the answer was very funny until he gathered up his things and said to the lady, "Not this time!" And he walked out. . .
I don't see respect and manners seem to be a lost art. There is nothing sexier than a well dressed man with impeccable manners. . .Whas up? And where'd they go?
