As indicated in earlier answers, the Germans surrendered unconditionally, because the Allied forces–Russian, British, and US, principally–destroyed their power to resist, and Hitler committed suicide.
After Harry Truman directed that the two newly developed atomic bombs be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Russians [finally!] declared war upon Japan, and the Japanese surrendered, not quite unconditionally. They stipulated that nothing was to happen to Emperor Hirohito, and the Allies (principally China, the U.K. and the U.S.), concurred in that exception.
Persons who are critical of Truman's decision have suggested he should have dropped bombs on uninhabited islands rather than cities. Most of them are unaware that we dropped two bombs, because we only had two bombs, the bombs were of very different design, and there was some doubt whether the implosion device would work (it did).

It ended in Europe because Germany surrendered in 1945 - but it took from 1939-1945 to end the War that started in 1918 because World War II was an extension of World War I.
Whilst the War in Europe was progressessing there was also the war in the Far East that started 7 Dec 1941 with the attack by the Japanese on your naval base at Pearl Harbour. So from 1941 there were two separate conflicts with two different eventual "surrenders".
Both the Germans and the Japanese and the Italians to some exten wanted to expand their Empires and took on the rest of the world to do and of course, failed.
I am sure you can add to your knowledge by using the web and reading a few books.

World War 2 offically ended for the UK and Commonwealth in 1951 (fighting stopped in 1945, but a peace treaty was not actually completed and a state of war against Germany was not signed until then). The victor states occupied Germany until the unification of Germany in 1991 and still hold bases on German soil.
The Japanese conflict was ended in August 1945 by the signing of a treaty onboard the American Battleship USS Missisori (I think this spelling is right?) by representatives of the Japanese Emperor and Representatives of 40 odd Allied Countries.

Most people seem to forget that there was a war going on in the pacific too.
Many things could have ended the conflict there. The allies were planning on invading Japan and could have just used the meat grinder approach to consume the Japanese land mass much at they did in Germany. This would have meant the deaths of many hundreds of thousand of people, mostly Japanese but probably at least 50,000 American solders too.
However, the atomic bomb was dropped, the emperor saw the futile endeavor his country now faced, a coup against him was stopped and he was able to surrender.
So I believe that the atomic bomb brought the war to an end. You ask "by who" I guess it was the property of the US but England did a great deal to assist in the development as well as scientist from all over the world who had fled to the US.

international conflict II led to '40 5 while Japan surrendered. Russia and Japan under no circumstances signed a treaty, so even although international conflict II ended, Russia and Japan have been nonetheless at conflict. In different words, WWII led to 1945, so Russia and Japan resolved the conflict regarding them. -Alexander

In the West the war was ended by the Russians who after a herculean struggle at Leningrad, Stalingrad and Kursk pushed the Nazis back across Europe and invaded Germany, Hitler died with the Russians almost at the door of his bunker. His successor Admiral Doenitz surrendered,
In the East the US detonated two atomic bombs above Hiroshima and Nagasaki and threatened to attack Tokyo next. The Japanese emperor surrendered unconditionally.

Well, it didn't happen in a day, but I'll try to put it in a nutshell. British and American forces stormed the beaches in Normandy which was the beginning of a pushback of the German forces across France, whilst Russian forces attacked Germany from the east.
At the very end, Russian troops had Berlin under siege and were closing in on Hitler. Hitler, with no way out, then killed himself.

The Allies crushed the Third Reich in Europe and America dropped two atomic bombs on Japan.
Now, based on your question, you do not know anymore than you did before I answered.
Have a Nice Day
Isn't it curious that none of the earlier answers mentioned Japan?
