Might simply need a drive letter assigned.
Right click MY COMPUTER
Select MANAGE
Click the "local disk management" on left pane
In lower right pane, locate the Ext drive (check size)
Right click it,
choose Change / assign drive letter
Assign unused letter

If it shows as "raw drive" or "unpartitioned" right click, select the partition/format options to format and partition it.
Restart windows to let changes take effect properly, and enjoy

I have just plugged in a USB external hard drive to my Mac and it is working without any need to modify the OS.

I understand that when the Apple is powered up, it checks itself, to see what is plugged into it.

You don't need to create a partition.

Your first theory was correct, just plug it in & transfer your files over.

Job done.
