Only one lake in the National Park has the word "Lake" in its name, namely Bassenthwaite Lake. All the others such as Windermere, Coniston Water, Ullswater and Buttermere use other forms, with mere being particularly common. Their names are:
Bassenthwaite Lake, Buttermere, Coniston Water, Crummock Water, Derwent Water
Devoke Water, Ennerdale Water, Esthwaite Water, Grasmere, Haweswater Reservoir
Loweswater, Rydal Water, Thirlmere, Ullswater, Wast Water, Windermere
However, a lake is defined as: a body of water or other liquid of considerable size contained on a body of land. A vast majority of lakes on Earth are fresh water, and most lie in the Northern Hemisphere at higher latitudes. In ecology the environment of a lake is referred to as lacustrine. ... So, there are 17 bodies of water in the national park that are actually lakes, in accordance with the definition and one with the the word lake in it’s title although I have heard the name ‘LakeWindermere’ rather than just ‘Windermere’, in fact a company offering cruises on that lake give their address as Lake Windermere Cumbria.

I think there are 14 large areas of water. Let's count them: Haweswater, Windermere, Elterwater, Grasmere, Brothers Water, Ullswater, Derwent Water, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater, Wastwater, Coniston Water, Tarn Howes and Thirlmere. Then there's Bassenthwaite Lake - the only one which is actually called a lake. Haven't lived there since 1963, so I might have missed one - but whatever it is, it isn't a Lake.

There is only one lake (with the word lake in its name) in the lake district, going by the name Bassenthwaite Lake, however there are about 16 main lakes in the lake district. Also, Windermere also sometimes goes by the name of Lake Windermere. There are definately over 300 tarns at least although i cannot find the exact amount.
