I have a 2006 bmw 325i. I decided to test my handbrake in a parking lot only to find that it didn't work while moving. Is this a new safety feature, or does the handbrake need to be pulled really hard?

no it probably needs to be adjusted on it,usually when the brake isn't working right this means it need adjusted or the pads or shoes are worn out on it,and they wont work good if the pads or shoes are worn out,you might want to get the brake checked on this car, they may be in need of replacing, they may seem good now,but they can be about worn out and still stop good, its worth checking out, good luck.

It's possible that it's just out of adjustment, or the car has been driven with the handbrake partly engaged, and has worn out the brake shoes. Either way, it's not hard to repair. It may still be under warranty... Check with your local BMW dealer.

The handbrake on your vehicle is a rear drum brake, cable operated system, these brake shoes need to be first bedded into the drum, then an adjustment will be necessary, this can be done from inside the vehicle but i would suggest taking it to the dealer.

Possibly rusted up from lack of use, or could be locked out because car is in a drive gear.

MAYbe under warranty?
I'd think a 2006 IS under warranty!
