I work on an adolescent psychiatric unit. Half of the unit is the inpatient unit, where the teenagers are there for about a week or so. The other half is a residential unit for teenagers who need longer term care...usually about 6 to 9 months. I'm a therapist assistant. We've been called "glorified babysitters." :) It's more than that though. I supervise the teenagers in all their activities...make sure no one is throwing chairs in anger or trying to sneak around to hook up with someone else (this has happened). I lead activity groups for the kids. I chart progress notes on them. Sometimes we take the residents off the unit for outings to fun places, like the movies, bowling, out to eat, etc. I do a lot of damage control...keep fights and arguments from happening among the kids, I know restraint techniques if the kids become a danger to themselves or others (actually holding them down as well as restraints like you see in movies....fortunately that doesn't happen often). My job is more emotionally demanding as opposed to physically demanding...hearing about what the kids have been through already in life can be sad and dealing with behavioral problems on the unit can become frustrating. But overall, I have a pretty cool job and I like it.
