I, Robot and ClaireDePlume – I’m quite fascinated with these answers. They both speak to the distinction between indifference and the *appearance* of indifference. A few days ago, I would have defined “malevolent indifference” as a self-contradictory term. Only the action counts? Interesting. Thank you for your thoughts (and CDP, thanks for the loan of whatever magics you possess; you somehow brought this question back from the dead).

How could anyone behold the majestically unfolding story that is "The Universe" and remain "indifferent", if not for his/her ambiguous perception of reality, clouded by self-interest, ignorance, illness (in the broadest sense of the word), and/or despair. ... Indifference is certainly a major threat to the individual's well-being, as for the humanity as a whole; let's put it this way: I'm keeping my fingers crossed, though I'm certainly NOT holding my breathe.

I don't think humanity as a whole is indifferent, though we here in America seem to be plagued with indifference, especically over the last 7 years. What we decide has a huge impact on the rest of the world, so if our ignorance and indifference spread like a disease to the rest of the world, then the answer will be yes.

Dear Q.T.,
You've asked if "indifference" is the greatest threat to humanity. Indifference, the way I interpret it is, the absence of love.
Indifference can be derived from ignorance, and more lethal than this, indifference can come from purposeful intent.
Ignorant indifference holds a glimmer of hope for redemption & enlightenment; malevolent indifference is far more deadly. When people purposely cause harm to one another by turning away in retaliation or loathing, or any of the other well known cruelties, the humanity in us devolves and turns in on itself in an act of terrorism of man against man where nothing rests until all is destroyed.
And so to answer your question, it is malevolent indifference which greatly threatens humanity and evidence of this all-consuming cancer can be witnessed daily.

nicely , the finest option chance to humanity is going to be the "height OIL" at the same time as international oil manufacturing will attain their optimal factor , and then bypass into terminal decline it does not take a genius to be certain out how a lot our latest civilization relies upon on the exploitation of fossil fuels . it takes 8 to fifteen calorie of fossil gasoline to get a million calorie of foodstuff . so it is going to convey famine in underdeveloped international in our bid to counter we are able to turn to different varieties of gasoline from tar sands to coal , a catalyst for extra international warming until eventually the humanity does not unite , we the people will pay a huge very enormous value

Indifference is the absence of feeling or interest. I believe it is one of the greatest threats to humanity. If every human is indifferent about the fact that our marine animals are endangering, then we will not have seafood. And for those people who live on islands with seafood as a major part of their diet, that is definitely the greatest threat to their diet. Not only that, but other animals that depend on eating seafood will also die out (i.e. penguins, polar bears). A simple form of indifference like excess fishing can threaten humanity, where humans are not even aware of the threats they are living under until "after the fact."

I wouldn't necessarily say "indifference" as a threat to humanity but rather inaction. One can act on behalf of a cause and not necessarily be a fervent supporter (would not care one way or the other) of such a cause as long as they are given an incentive. In other words, for the right price one will be on your side.
Inaction, on the other hand, is far more detrimental. One can be sympathetic to a cause but if one does not put such sympathy to use, such strong feelings mean nothing. Sloth is far worse than selfishness.

Indeed indifference separates a person to the common good. I would definitely say it is one of the greatest threat to humanity because it is a form of alienating oneself to reality. The indifference of a person makes him or her in solitude. Said person drives himself out of this world. As if he lives on island with no people around. He has his own world that detach him very much. Indifference separates humanity and therefore divides humanity.
Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

somehow, I guess so. If people get so hooked up with their own personal problems and matters, everything else fades away. They don't give a damn anymore about what's happening on the other side of their territory. It's all "I-Me-Mine" thinking...and the rest is 'disinterest'.
When concern is limited and contained to one's self, the spirit of sharing which humanity is all about dies unattended. Imagine a world that's left to rot on its own...because nobody cares...and nobody dares to make a move to save it. It's an attitude that ultimately kills all hopes for the survival of humanity.

Complacency and indifference or just too damned tired trying to keep up with the 'haves' while the 'have nots' are stealing what you have. Humanity is in really deep manure. Maybe we should just settle into blooming idiots.
