to answer the one other guy, the american nightmare transmission (as he calls it) is NOT in this vehicle. yours is a 4t65e. there is a dipstick located in the back of the engine compartment on the drivers side. Sounds kind of serious though. Your only chance is to change the firlter and fluid and see if you can nurse it along. Thats only a band aid though. And by the way, THat nightmare trans 4t40e has been one of the most reliable ones ever put out. i would know becauwe if so many were breaking, id be making alot more money

It sounds like some clip joint serviced your tranny and didn't add enough fluid to keep it running smooth. You are likely at least one to three quarts low on fluid. You need to check the level while it is running and wipe the dipstick if you have one and then stick it in and check it. Don't look for splatters just a nice even line of fluid across the dipstick. If you don't see this then you are too low on fluid.

If you have one of these American nightmare tranny set ups like the Malibu and the Cavalier then you can't even check the fluid level and the pan would have to be dropped and then the tranny refilled from the refill hole in the top of the tranny housing and with the EXACT amount of fluid the book calls for (the dealer will tell you) after a tranny service that includes filter and pan removal but NOT torque convertor removal.

Good Luck!

P.S. Amazing how the American car companies can't figure out why they are losing out to the Japanese and other models. As if a tranny dipstick and fill tube would break them if they kept it on the newer cars. It'll break them when people leave the lot and go buy a car that DOES have a tranny dipstick and fill tube.

sounds like you need a rebuilt/new transmission. or just change the fluid in that one and hope it solves the problem. how many miles you got?
