In most instances, no. Addiction to certain substances caused changes in the brain (such as upregulation of dopamine receptors) additional doses of the drug are then nescesarry to produce the same "buzz", which will ultimately, lead to permanant damage or death due to other toxic effects of substances of misuse. However there are sometimes obvious issues of co-morbidity with depression etc. so it can become a little chicken or the egg. e.g. dperession lead to drug use or vice versa and addiction maintain the drug dependence or relapse which contributes to the depressive disorder which can ultimately lead to suicide. However in most instaces suicide by drug overdose is not intentional.

Smoking, drinking and drugs are addictive. Overdosing is a consequence of an addictive and out of control lifestyle.
It is self-destructive. It is courting death. Technically, if you die from an overdose, you did kill yourself. Maybe, you didn't plan on not waking up, but you didn't let the possibility stop you.

If it´s done deliberately with the intention of terminating life then it is.Suicide is also a cowardly way to to solve ones problems as it causes more problems in its wake than any that have been resolved by this dastardly act. What ever happened to the old belief that ones body belongs to God and that He will determine the time and place of our final exit?
