Alexander was from AUTHENTIC MACEDONIA OF GREECE, the famous Greek kingdom of Macedonia or Macedon. (Still authentic Macedonia is in Greece and is sometimes referred as Greek-Macedonia)
He was not from the modern republic of (Slavic/Albanian)-Macedonia which has no relation with ancient Macedonia.
(Ancient (Greek)Macedonians were part of a group of Greek tribes that were called Dorians.)
Alexander was not only Greek but he also had a divine and heroic line of family.
From his father side (Philip of Macedon) he claimed descent from Hercules. Philip was a descendant of the Argead Dynasty {the royal family of authentic Macedonia (Greek-Macedonia)}. The Argeads originated from the southern Greek city state of Argos and they had established the Greek kingdom of Macedonia in 808BC.
The Argeads –and thus Philip and Alexander- claim descent from the famous Greek hero Hercules and they had blood ties with the Spartans. (The mother of Philip –Eurydice- was a princess from the Greek royal house of Lyncestes (a small Greek kingdom in the northern Greek Macedonia) and was a descendant of the Beachhead dynasty of the northern Greek city of Corinth.)
The mother of Alexander was Olympias a princess from the ancient Greek kingdom of Epirus. Her family –the royal house of Epirus- claim descend from Neoptolemus, son of the most heroic Achilles.
Therefore Alexander was a Greek not only by blood descent but also by Heroic and even Devine Greek descent. (The royal emblem of the Greek Royal house of Macedonia was the club of Hercules!)
(As for the ancient Macedonians it is a well established fact by historians that they were a typical Greek tribe.)
Besides his pure Greek descent Alexander was also tutored by Aristotle. Under his years of studding philosophy, Alexander became a follower of pan-Hellenism, a new trend in Greece which supported the unification of all the Greek states in one powerful Greek empire that would attack and destroy Persia! Further more Alexander was convinced that he should spread Greek culture and language throughout the known world!
Alexander (and Philip) for the first time in history manage to unite all the Greek states!
It was a gigantic task and it took a lot of years of alliances and war.
Finally Philip and later Alexander were called “General Emperor” of all the Greeks.
A title that no Greek would manage to achieve again!
Alexander’s campaign was an epic campaign of the Greek expansion.
The Greek language and culture became international and hundreds of Greek cities were build through out Asia. (Most famous was the imperial Alexandria in Egypt. The model Greek city)
Alexander was also responsible for the creation of a New Greek language the famous “Koine” (or “Biblical Greek” or “Alexander’s Greek”). Koine Greek was a composition of the several Greek dialects (such as attic, Ionian, (Greek)Macedonian etc) and was spread through out Alexander’s empire. Greek became international for at list 600 years.
The gospels were written in Alexander’s Greek language and they were very easily spread through out the Greek world.
But the most important was the fact that Alexander didn’t force the Greek culture in the areas he conquered. He instead fused Greek culture with Asian elements creating a New Greek culture called “Hellenistic”.
And a few quotes from ancient sources:
"There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service -- but how different is theirs cause from ours ! They will be fighting for pay--- and not much of it at that; we on the contrary shall fight for Greece, and our hearts will be in it. As for our foreign troops ---Thracians, Paeonians, Illyrians, Agrianes --- they are the best and stoutest soldiers of Europe, and they will find as their opponents the slackest and softest of the tribes of Asia."
(Arrian, 11.7)
"You ought to have remembered that you are not the attendant of and adviser of Cambyses or Xerxes, but of Philip's son, a man with the blood of Heracles and Aeacus in his veins, a man whose forefathers came from Argos to Macedonia, where they long ruled not by force, but by law."
(Arrian 4.11)
"Well, here we are in a foreign land; and if for that reason we must think foreign thoughts, yet I beg you, Alexander, to remember Greece; it was for her sake alone, that you might add Asia to her empire, that you undertook this campaign. Consider this too: when you are home again, do you really propose to force the Greeks, who love their liberty more than anyone else in the world, to prostrate themselves before you?"
(Arrian 4.11)
"But Alexander said: `If I were not Alexandros, I should be Diogenes'; that is to say: `If it were not my purpose to combine barbarian things with things GREEK, to traverse and civilize every continent, to search out the uttermost parts of land and sea, to push the bounds of Macedonia to the farthest Ocean, and to disseminate and shower the blessings of the GREEK JUSTICE and peace over every nation, I should not be content to sit quietly in the luxury of idle power, but I should emulate the frugality of Diogenes. But as things are, forgive me Diogenes, that I imitate Herakles, and emulate Perseus, and follow in the footsteps of Dionysos, THE DIVINE AUTHOR AND PROGENITOR OF MY FAMILY , AND DESIRE THAT VICTORIUS GREEKS SHOULD DANCE AGAIN IN INDIA and revive the memory of the Bacchic revels among the savage mountain tribes beyond the Kaukasos...' "
(Plutarchos, On the Fortune of Alexander, 332 a-b)
That’s why he is considered the greatest hero of Greece!
Hope I’ve helped you!
{Do not confuse the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia or Macedon (which was the birth place of Alexander) with the modern state of (Slavic/Albanian)Macedonia as they are not related at all). The confusion has started a few years ago because that small state started to use the name “Republic of Macedonia” causing a great confusion with authentic Macedonia of Greece.}

Macedonia is only one and it's Greek.

Ancient Greece was not a united country and consisted by city-states which where different kingdoms. The city-states were independent, had different laws and rules. Every city was like a small country. But all city-states had the same culture , the same language and religion and the most important the same ancestry. Greeks were constituted by tribes, Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians, Pelasgians etc . They were all the same . But every city had interests for their own good (don't forget the war between Athens and Sparta) !
Macedonia was a Greek Kingdom.
Before king Philip, Macedonia was not one of the powerful kingdoms of Greece. When Philip and Alexander the Great get more power , it was logical that the other city-states were not happy with that.
Alexander wanted to unite for the first time all the Greeks in order to fight the big danger of Persia.
But big powers like Athens , didn't like the idea to be united but under the Macedonian commands.

To answer to "ovcichka" :

Athenians , who were the biggest power until then, as i said were not happy. So they tried to harm the reputation of the Macedonians by calling them barbarians.
It's the same "game" that people play today , POLITICS !

But they all knew , and we know that by ancient documents, that Macedonia (Μακεδονία) was a part of Greece.

Furthermore , if you had read some history you would know that all the Greek city-states were fighting each other and making wars .
For example the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta.
The war between Aegina and Athens.
This means that Sparta , Aegina and others are not Greek?

As for your nation, you all came here in the 6th Century during the Byzantine times. You are a Slavic nation (it's not bad why you decline it?) and this is obvious in your language and generally your culture.

The history can not change , even when other countries like USA support you because they have interests in your area.

Learn your history, learn your heritage because this situation is pathetic !

At the time of Alexander there were no Slavs. They appeared 700 years later. Also, the Slavic state of Former Yugslav Republic Of Macedonia received the name of "Macedonia" in 1945. Until then, it was an area called Vardarska with populations of Slavs, Bulgarians and Albanians. the communist dictator Tito gave it this name, to create a national identity for them, so that they wouldn't split, like the rest of former Yugoslav Republics.
Alexander as his parents had Greek names, spoke Greek, and were a totally Greek kingdom.

He was Greek-Macedonian.
He is known for the Hellenistic era of the history of Greece.
He was more precisely from the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon.
The republic of Macedonia is a very new state and it is mainly Slavic with an Albanian minority.
It has no relation with the Greek Macedonia which is southern.

Makedonia is part of Greece. Alexander was from Greek Makedonia. He was not from FYROMacedonia. The usage of "Macedonian" as a nationality was an invention of Marshal Josip Broz Tito in 1944. Tito, the communist dictator of Yugoslavia, created a false "Macedonian" ethnic consciousness among his south Slavic citizens for a number of reasons, including his campaign against Greece to gain control of Greece's province of Macedonia and the main prize of the major port city of Thessaloniki. Until Tito changed the name, this province was named Vardar Banovina.
There is no unqualified universally accepted rule of international law that authorizes a state to name itself anything it wants. It is not proper for a country which is part of a region to define itself officially as representing the whole region.
