November 11 is Armistice Day, celebrating the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. The peace treaty was signed at 11 o'clock in the morning (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month).
Armistice Day is also known as Veterans' Day where the country honors all its fallen heroes.
Unfortunately, most of us let this day pass without so much as a second glance. Even those of us who work for the government and get the day off don't bother to use the day to mark any significance of its purpose. We just use our paid holiday to lay around and do nothing, go shopping at WalMart, or get blitzed.
There used to be magnificent parades and memorials honoring our fallen soldiers; nowadays, such parades bolster little - if any - attendance. Americans are too busy following Britney Spears' love life, cheering their favorite football team to victory, or shopping for plastic junk they don't need at WalMart, K-Mart or Target.
We're too busy with our creature comforts to take time out to honor those who died protecting our freedoms. -RKO- 10/13/07
