Here I am again. I have two questions.

I had a friend from Brazil. She had lived in Japan for years. When we were walking in the street together, this woman approahced us and asked how to get to the nearest station. She said she came from France. After a short while, the French lady asked my Brazilian friend, saying ' How do you like Japan so far?' She replied 'I like it here very much'.

Well, Is the expression 'How do you like ~so far?' in this situation commonly used? I know she wanted to ask my friend if she likes Japan or is enjoying her life in Japan. She wasn't a native English speaker and I remember her English was not very good, so I'm just wondering.

[the next question]

---He didn't expect his mother to be so angry.

Can I say ' He didn't expect that his mother was so angry.' using that-clause ?

Would you help me ?

First question:

Using "How do you like.." is a perfectly appropriate phrase for English. Generally it would be used in exactly that type of situation, where people are making what we call 'small talk,' (a general conversation).

Second question:
"He didn't expect THAT his mother WOULD (or you could use 'could be') be so angry" or "He didn't expect his mother to be so angry." It has to do with past/future tense, but the full explanation eludes my mind at the moment.

I'm surprised that the French lady was familiar with "so far." It implies "Your limited exposure to Japan would not permit sound judgement." It also has an ironic meaning in "Wait a while, and you'll see it's no bed of roses."
"Beardo" is grammatically correct; but the first sentence is perfectly acceptable to all but perfectionists.

I don't have a problem with either one of your sentences.
"How do you like Japan so far?"
Or, "He didn't expect his mother to be so angry."

"How do you like xxx so far ?" sounds right to me. The "so far" implies that person being asked has not been their very long.

I think "that" makes it a subjunctive.
To me, "He didn't expect that his mother would be so angry" sounds right.
