It's a great idea to check out a copy of Writers Market from your library and look at it. Read the chapters on how to submit manuscripts, then look at some of the book publishers' pages.

The truth is its very hard to sell a book these days to a major publisher. As they have merged into major corporations (all but Kensington in NYC are owned by two giant German corporations), they have cut staff and the number of books they publish. They've also put way too much emphasis on celebrity tell-all books.

The end result of this is you have small publishers who are getting bigger. Readers are turning to them to find really good books. The problem is these growing small publishers have dropped the idea of mass market paperbacks (expensive to print and destroy) in favor of print on demand trade paperbacks. A lot of brick-and-mortar bookstores will not carry these so they have to rely on electronic books and online sales.

Then you have the glut of vanity publishers who make big bucks by selling the dream of being published to new authors who are fed up with NYC publishers, but haven't discovered the legitimate small publishers. Vanity publishers get you to foot the bill for printing the book. After that their efforts are pretty spotty. None of the bookstores will carry them because the quality simply isn't there. If you can't find their titles in Barnes & Noble or on Amazon, you simply don't want to deal with them.

That's publishing in a nutshell. Now concentrate on writing your book. Write it for yourself. Enjoy it. When the first draft is done, then worry about submitting it.

Writing and getting a book published has been a difficult task in the past. However, with the Internet and the technology now available it is much easier. As stated in another answer there are many frauds who will take your money and you will get nothing in return. The process would begin with the subject and an outline of what you want to accomplish. I would search for publishers that have experience in your genre and/or subject. This will help to possibly get some guidance on the topic and how to market the finished product.

It does not matter which type of publisher you choose as it will almost if not all be the responsibility of the author to create a demand for your book and generate marketing related to your book. The key to any book is to identify how your book is different from the others already published. It must stand out as different for people willing to buy it.

As far as which publisher to use I have a free download on my web site www.myqualitywriting.com which identifies my experience getting published and offers some tips in review contractual language of publishers. My book is a self-published one through Infinity Publishing. My web site also offers marketing tips and information from myself and other writers on getting published.

I participate in two networking sites www.bookmarket.ning.com and www.writersweekly.com in their forum. Both sites offer wide opportunities to get answers from others who have traveled the road to getting a book published. The writersweekly forum is free to join and you can ask questions related to getting feedback from other writers and their publishing recommendations.

I hope this helps. If you truly have an interest in writing a book I would highly recommend it. Your enthusiasm about your topic will show through in the content you generate.

Good luck

No. Ebook does now not routinely identical vainness publishing or self-publishing. Anyone can placed their books in digital layout. Look at a few not too long ago released books by way of the significant publishers, and you'll be able to see that there is additionally an e book variant for many who desire the e book. Ebooks is simply an additional layout of publishing. So, you'll be able to have a industrial writer who places out the bodily ebook and the e book variant of your ebook - that is fitting the ordinary with industrial publishing. I'd as an alternative have an e book released by way of a industrial writer than self-publishing it.

Dave, this is a very hard row to hoe. The publishing business is full of frauds. Any ad you see that starts: "We are looking for book authors..." are advertising for vanity presses which will only take your money, publish your book at exhorbitant rates and do nothing to promote your book. To find a publisher you should send a query letter to a potential publisher. Be prepared to receive tons of rejections slips. I mean this literally (I've received enough rejection slip to wall paper my bedroom).

Another tip, anyone who asks for money up front to either read your manuscript or publish your book is someone you need to avoid. Legitimate publishers and agents do not charge a reading fee. If you can, find an agent to represent your work. Again if they want money up front, forget it.

Last tip: Try querying university presses about your book proposal.

Good luck.

I would like to suggest that you look into self-publishing. I have used createspace.com it will also send it to Amazon and can be published on demand. That way, you don't have to purchase a bunch of copies of your book and store them in your garage in hopes that you can sell them. They also offer for a nominal fee, marketing/advertising for your book. Its quite easy and you have complete controll!! You do need to be able to write your book using Adobe 3 and above for formatting purposes.
