Yes it is good idea. Military service teaches discipline and thus self discipline. it also builds self confidence and get people working together as a team.

Why? What good will it accomplish? Are YOU willing to serve one year in the military?

One year of community service should not be imposed on anyone. Any type of mandatory service is wrong. The government takes your money, isn't that enough? If you so desperately want to "make a difference" you can do it by volunteering. But to force people to do such is just plain stupid. If someone is not motivated or not interested they will not do a good job, in fact they might even be a detriment. In some cases "every little bit" does not help.

A good option to what? To give a year of service in the military is a little silly... it takes at a minimum of six month of training to be able to effectively preform in Military service. Are you counting training time and expense here for one years worth of service? There is also relocation to consider... Off the top of my head that does not sound to cost effective!!

Community service on the other hand is something that everyone in the community should be involved in.

If your referring to service as an option for criminals... I'm not sure I want that person in a uniform! It might straighten them up but what if it doesn't... same for putting them in the community with access to people who are perhaps vulnerable?

I think it would be a GREAT option.

Mandatory for citizenship.

No, that does't mean you have to join the military, either. You can be a cop, a fireman, work in the Dept. of Interior in the forestry area, etc, etc.

The single biggest problem with many of today's younger people in this country is that most of them have never been a part of anything bigger than themselves. At best, they have been a part of a sports team, which while is bigger than themselves, but even then, that is a group of maybe 100 people, usually far less.

No, after all what does the military teach. to follow orders. This country needs more people who know how to think. The last thing that we need is more sheep.
