It just means that you cant just pull it straight out of the USB port. If you do want to disconnect it you must right click the little icon on the low right hand side of you computer (by the time display)

And choose the "safely remove hardware" option.
Highlight "USB Mass storage device" and click "STOP"
Once the bubble pops up to say its okay to remove it (and the ipod screen returns to normal) you can unplug the ipod form the pc.
To unplug it straight from itunes; here's the instructions formt he apple website itself:

Hope that helps, there's some good screen caps there!

It will say that until you tell the Computer to "eject" it and then you can unplug it. You need to go to the iTunes software and next to the name of your Ipod with be an icon that will do this. When that's done your Ipod will return to it's normal screen and you can unplug it.

wait till the "do not disconnect" sign goes. Then dismount the ipod (click on the icon in the left hand column) and you can unplug it - easy peasy.

when it's synching there is a swirly circle in the corner at top of your ipod, if it's not there you can probably remove it safely. mine has done that where it wouldn't eject from itunes and once it stopped swirling i just unplugged it. nothing happened to my ipod, it works fine and everything was still intact.

if it happens for a long time, simply press the centre button and menu at the same time, or 'x' off itunes.
That should work
