Is it illegal to draw portraits of celebrities for a profit?

If I draw portraits of celebrities from pictures in magazines, cd covers, etc would this be illegal to sell the drawings via ebay or somewhere?

i don't know for sure- but i would think if you drew portraits from pictures that weren't copyrighted (not posed or taken by a professional photographer) then you would be ok. however, copying the artwork from a cd cover or other copyrighted materials could get you into some trouble.

You must speak to an attorney. You are attempting to profit from the "intellectual property" (the creation and vision) of another and if these works that are inspiring you are published and/or manufactured... they are copyrighted materials and, as such, the property of another. It would be considered copyright infringement. The keyword here is 'profit.' If these portraits were for your own enjoyment and use and not made for material gain.. it would be acceptable. No, because it is you drawing the picture, it would be illegal to pritn a picture off the internet and sell that

It is illegal if you copy those from somebody elses picture without promition. Movies count too.

technically yup the photograph of the celeb is copyright to the photographer while you're making numerous money you would be able to get a telephone call from them or the publishers. in case you regulate the photograph sufficient to make it your man or woman, or make a composite from a number of diverse photographs, or do only no longer make sufficient money for all of us to be conscious, you're interior the sparkling
