If I heard a whirring noise from my car's engine that did what you describe, the first things I would check would be external (from the engine) fittings containing bearings such as alternator, water pump, power steering pump, belt tensioners etc. etc.
Hope this helps.

if coming from fnt of engine suspect timing belt tensioner or idler problems . if belt was just changed out the mechanic may have set the tension a little to tight. either way have car checked out by a competant shop as this is a valve bender and is not worth the price of a valve job if the belt breaks [you will be able to purchase one that runs for the cost of repairs] and maybe have a little left over to boot.

Try squirting a little WD40 on the drive belts Alternator/power steering see if that stops it. If it does you need a new belt. If not, it could be several things which may well prove rather expensive !
