The idea of a length of a sentence is not in how many words are in it but wether it expresses the thought behind the sentence. If the thought can be broken into smaller expressions, then do so. If the thought cannot be broken down without losing its overall appeal, then leave the sentence longer. This breaks up the grey space and gives the writing a rythm.
