I think that stairs are meant to go up, but also you can go down them.

stairs go any way you wish, its the need of the user that defines if they go up or down. although i always view stairs as going up as they lead you from one level to another.

stairs don't go anywhere, they just sit and do nothing......
now escalators go both up and down....at the same time....the front goes up and the other side goes down.....and vice versa......hmmmmmm you could almost say they go round and round, yet they are not round at all
