Has anyone switched to TalkTalk for their telephone/Internet service and found it to be useless? Everyone I know who's gone to TalkTalk has repeated difficulties connecting to the Broadband Internet, sometimes it's hours or days before the connection is made. The phone line also has poor quality too, and dial-up Internet connections are often disconnected. We used to be with BT and had problems occasionally, but nothing like this. It's happening every day. The telephone exchange is about 3 miles away, surely that's not so far that it would affect the signal? The Broadband speed is 400kbps, but should be about 8mb.

Initially talktalk were an absolute nightmare. I signed up for their phone & free broadband in March of this year. The phone initiated straight away. I finally got my Broadband end of June, but I must say the connection has`nt dropped out once since then. So far so good. Watch this space.
P.S. I live 2 miles from the exchange

Talk Talk as a service provider are crap, but remember that the line is still delivered over the BT network, so if your line is problematic then it would be the same as if you were with BT. Broadband wise, the speed is reduced the further you are away from the exchange and 0.4 meg is near enough to 0.5 meg which is better than dial up. Don't forget, that it is UP to 8 meg, not a guaranteed 8 meg for every end user. I live about 700 metres from my local exchange and I get around 6 to 6.5 meg. You are the consumer. If you don't like, then vote with your feet.

TalkTalk are completely sh1t!
I have had the exact same problem as you (less than 512kbps, no connection for days on end and my exchange is just 3 miles away too, funnily enough!)
I tried various methods, software and hardware to help speed me up and nothing worked. Do not try to do anything to improve your talktalk connection. It's useless, It won't work, you are trapped, just switch and wait for your contract to end.
TalkTalk will blame BT for the bad line, BT will blame Talk Talk for oversubscribed servers etc.
I just bit the bullet after hours of complaining and trying to escape my 18 month contract(!) and signed up to Virgin. I just use talk talk for cookie connection now and enjoy fast, uninterrupted cable service for everything else.
Talktalk still have my barely audible, crackly landline phone but Virgin will upgrade all connections Free when talk talk expires. I already have my business phone with them in the same room and it's crystal clear.
You know what to do..

As the saying goes....you get what you pay for. Get something for free, don't expect a high quality service. As you've found out, a free service can be a false economy.
Talktalk have an industry wide reputation for being among the worst broadband suppliers in the UK

My Sister had a similar issues. She has now replaced to BT and would not look having any significant issues. once you do replace carriers (i'm assuming that you'll) do no longer pass to ORANGE. i become with them till February (now also with BT) and they are poor. My provider become down for 9 weeks and then when I cancelled my provider they ahd the cheek to charge me an 18.ninety 9 disconnection value. regardless of the very undeniable truth that I spent very nearly one hundred kilos phoning there stupid so-noted as technical help line.

I don't have talk talk broadband but my mum did go for it, she installed the modem that they supplied and it completely messed up the registry, either stay with dial up or go with some other broadband supplier
