There are degrees of conservatism and degrees of liberalism. The far left and the far right are not representative of moderates in either party but these are the focus of people's opinions about both parties.
The vast majority of people who vote are moderates in both parties. Too often the politicians are pandering to extremists and independents in hopes of gaining their votes. It is skewing the view of both parties in my opinion.
The republicans have historically used unethical standards in attacking the democrats with contrived or exaggerated claims thinking the end justifies the means unless they have an outstanding candidate which they do not have in either party at this time. This will be an extremely dirty campaign on both sides unless some new candidates appear or perceptions are changed of these candidates.
