hi everybody.
my car is an old bmw 525 tds(turbo diesel ).
the automatic transmission is a zf 5 hp18.
my problem is:
when i put the trans.in drive , the car will not accelerate normally from a start in first gear
it moves slowly just like the brakes were applied at the same time i accelerate.
the car drags, and the engine does not rev up...
then second shifts and it's ok...
when i put the selector in reverse, there is no problem at all...
what may be the solution?
thank you for your attention.
mike

Wow that was when I worked for BMW stone age 525TD. I think the first clutch pack in the gear box has worn out. If it was ten years ago I would have said pull the gear box and oil pump and just replace the First clutch frictions and steels. But time and wear are not on your side planatary gears are worn and other parts and seals will also need replacing. Have you driven a New BMW lately? Any new car lately? Probably not! the old oil burnner just kept running until now. And your still trying to make it break down it will.

Shooting yourself over that is definitly extreme. However, even though its just 5 games into the season there is cause for concern. Tampa is playing very well and is looking like they could be a competitor all season which means the AL East won't be the typical two horse race it usually is. Now I'm not saying the season is over, I just don't think that Yankee fans should expect the type of turn around they've come accustomed to.

It sounds like your 525tds is trying to start off in 4th gear. The suggestion of changing the clutch packs may be the way to go to get it to shift correctly. Cost not considered. What happens when you select 2nd gear to start off from being stopped? I think I would limit my investment in this car to changing the transmission fluid (sludge) to see if anything is salvageable.

i would suspect a one way clutch slipping [acts like in 1st and 2nd at same time] but nasty fluid and a gummy valve body can do the same thing.
you can try a fluid change but unless the rest of the car is in top notch shape it is probabley not worth fixing [how much $$$ do you love the car?]
