Normally three runs is the maximum,a batsman can get before the ball is retrieved near the boundary. He rarely gets a fourth or even fifth run when the ball is misfielded or if there is a overthrow or bad throw to the wicket.

to score one run the striker and non striker have to run and cross ends. If they do it two or 3 times, 2 or 3 runs are scored.
