The bendix on your starter is not catching due to a faulty starter or your battery could be weak.
As far as your stalling don't know , could be that the alternator is not charging the battery
You have to fully charge the battery first and then diagnose the starter

I'm not too sure what you mean...
If the starter is turning the motor and it's not starting... I'd first check for spark. No spark... probably the ignition module or a computer problem. If there is spark... could be a sensor, computer or fuel problem. If the car isn't an antique, it just needs to be hooked up to a diagnostic code reader and the car will tell you what's wrong with it.
If the starter is not grabbing or turning the motor... and the car died while driving... It's probably a dead battery due to a bad alternator that quit charging it... or the alternator belt...
A car with a good alternator will continue to run once started even if the battery is disconnected. A car with a bad alternator will die while driving.
Everybody seems to think it's the battery, starter or solenoid, but that certainly wouldn't cause the car to quit while driving!!! It's a symptom... not the problem. It's common for a starter to turn, but not engage properly when there's not enough power.
My bet is that it will work fine if you charge the battery or borrow one from another vehicle... until the battery wears down again because the alternator isn't charging.

Ok, heres the deal. When you engage the starter by turning the key, the first thing that happens is the "pull in" windings AND the "hold in" windings energize in the solenoid. This provides the magnetic field required to push the shaft that operates the fork which pushes out the drive gear of the starter. Once it has been extended, then the "pull in" windings stop working as only the "hold in" winding is required to keep it in place. Only once the solenoid has extended the drive gear, does the ring that gives power to the starter motor make contact and allow current to flow to the starter motor.
So you have stated that you can hear the starter whining, which means it is turning, which means that the solenoid IS operating properly and pulling in the shaft which drives the gear out and also makes contact allowing the starter motor to turn. There is a fork that is moved over a pivot point by the solenoid, when moved by the solenoid, it will move the fork end which slides the gear out on its shaft. Over time that fork can become worn or broken, meaning that it will not push the starter out far enough to engage the flywheel or flex-plate.
I would suggest removing the starter, and taking it to a local auto parts store to be tested. This will verify weather or not the starter is working properly.

your battery is not holding the charge...
several causes.
1st check the leads are tight...
2nd check the lead to the starter solenoid is tight
if this doesnt make a difference, try tapping the starter motor... if it then turns over, its just dirty brushes... undo the retaining bolts and remove it, spray with WD40 and operate the bendix gear, which slides up and down the shaft...
replace it. retighten the bolts and bobs you uncles mothers live in lover...
it can only be 2 or 3 things... starter motor / starter relay / or loose wires...

Sounds like the problem is the starter.
The bendix is no good.
That is the thing that kicks the gear out so it catches the flywheel.
If it doesn't kick out - all you hear is a whiiiiirr
Take the starter off - you can hook it to a battery to confirm this is the problem.

Check to see if the battery is due for replacement, make sure all wires are connected.. have the starter checked, also the alternator if you can get them out take them to the auto part stores they have a machine that can tell if they are good or not.

The starter pinion gear is turning but it,s not spinning into mesh with the flywheel ring gear, check the wires on the starter solenoid for a bad connection

it has something to do with the starter motor or the spark plugs could be worn. But I'm not a mechanic so get it checked out.
