Try wearing gortex or polypropylene clothes. You can find them at REI or another outdoors kind of store. Believe it or not, the synthetics keep you warmer because they wick the water away from your body.
If that's not feasible, try wool. Wool may not be comfortable, but it retains it's ability to keep ou warm even when it is wet.
Stay away from cotton. It holds moisture, and you could get very cold and catch hypothermia. I know that this is probably contrary to what you've been told, but I'm an Alaska girl who has NEVER been frostbitten, and I was an advisor to a cold weather camp, and I've taken and given cold weather indoctrination courses...
Oh yeah, make sure you wear gloves!
