What would you tend to call them, if you had to draw the distinction? For instance, if you were talking going back from the shop or the toilets into the film? The auditorium? The theatre? The screen? I never know what word to use.

OK, the thing about going to the shop or the toilet was just an EXAMPLE. I've found myself needing a term for it in many different contexts, especially since I like cinema so much, and the whole cinema experience.

Well, the place near me calls them "theatres". I think if you said "room" everyone would know what you meant.

The auditorium (singular), auditoria (plural).

This English word comes from the Latin where it originally meant: a place for listening.

That is because the Romans only had places for people to gather and listen to plays and speeches, since film was unknown to the Romans at that time.

Larger and more spectacular events were staged in a Stadium (singular) Stadia (plural).

Auditorium would be the right word I suppose but if I was with someone and I was going to the loo or get a snack I would just say "I'll see you in there!!"

Theatre. "Auditorium", as the name suggests, is a place for listening - not viewing. "Back to my seat" is also acceptable.
