I looked through your answers' so far I seen alot of talk about who can or cannot be a mate. So I went to:

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Main Entry: 3mate
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, probably from Middle Low German māt; akin to Old English gemetta guest at one's table, mete food — more at meat
Date: 14th century
1 a (1): associate, companion (2)chiefly British : an assistant to a more skilled worker : helper (3)chiefly British : friend, buddy —often used as a familiar form of address barchaic : match, peer
2: a deck officer on a merchant ship ranking below the captain
3: one of a pair: as a: either member of a couple and especially a married couple b: either member of a breeding pair of animals c: either of two matched objects

I would use it in the third Defination a.

The answer is: If you think its cute when guys say mate, Then I'll start saying mate to you. And yes All my mates are female. They are the only bed-mates I'd want. Even if I worked on a ship.

maybe you think that 'cos you don't hear it much in America so it's kind of a novelty.

over here in England it's just an everyday word, same as in Oz, NZ, Ireland and a couple other places. It's probably over-used if anything.

you wouldn't normally call a member of the opposite sex 'mate' though 'cos it would be a bit like saying ''I think of you as one of the guys and nothing more'', so you would have to be sure they are okay with that , if you're just good friends and are both okay with that then it would fine though.

No , no mate does not mean cute. Cute is a little beautiful. Mate is someone officer working in a ship. If the officer is good looking we can call him handsome. So this mate means, an officer who can be cute or not. I am not working in a ship but my cousin does and I know about mates.
